Valentine's Day 2007 on Wangfujing in Beijing, China

photos and captions by: Gary Isse

Wangfujing is a major shopping area in China. It's not the street vendor stuff we're used to seeing in other parts of the country, but more the shopping center-style we are used to seeing back in the states. Rolex, Nike, Adidas and other name brand stores litter this area and provide Beijing with a very modern and high-priced shopping atmosphere. Perfect for Valentine's day.

I was here less than six months ago and this corner looked so much different. It's amazing how fast things change in this city. I love taking pictures of other people taking their pictures. I wonder if they get upset with me? Luckily, I don't stick around to find out.

Notice these two guys in the middle are laughing. Apparently, they have a remote-controlled-car they are hitting my foot with. I didn't notice until I took a step back after this picture and smashed it. Oh well. Guess who wasn't laughing then.

You can see the decorations all over the place for Valentine's Day and the Spring Festival.

Here's a perfect example of Spring Festival decorations scattered throughout China.

If you have a chance to visit the Wangfujing shopping area, stopping here for a bite to eat (or at least see what local like to eat) is a must.

I think she caught me taking a picture of her just after she took a nice big bite off of her stick. Her friends don't seem to notice but that little girl in the middle seems to be staring right at me. By the way, food-on-a-stick is a specialty in this alleyway.

And any kind of food can be found on a stick here. This guy was actually pretty proud to showcase his stuff to me.

Seahorses, star fish, scorpions and what appears to be some sort of larvae-on-a-stick.

Check out the terra-cotta warrior guarding the food.

And more people gnawing away at their sticks.

Here's another close-up view of some specialties-on-a-stick.

In case this kind of food isn't your style, and you feel like jamming one of those sticks down your throat...

Just look outside the gate and what do you see; Those three letters you can't get away from anywhere you go in China... KFC (and there's a McDonald's right next to it.)

Don't worry, the two next to the gate won't be angry if you leave.

Thank you, come again.

Considering that McDonald's seems to be a haven for couples on Valentine's day, I had to sneak in a take a look.

Although this seems pretty crowded. Surprisingly enough I was expecting more people.

I walked into a McDonald's in Guangzhou and there literally was no place to stand there were so many people.

I thought this was funny. It's about 30 degrees outside and they're eating ice cream and she's wearing a mini-skirt.

She how excited she is that her boyfriend popped the question... "would you go to Mickey D's with me?"

Another couple rushing to the golden arches.

Ah roses, they seem to be the currency of the day.

Here's another lady wearing a mini skirt. What is that all about?

Ah, couples everywhere. Love is in the air.

I'm not quite sure what this is suppose to be but I took a picture anyway.

I had to go into a shopping center to find the Sony store and thought I'd share a few pictures of it with you.

There's no escaping Valentine's day... even in the mall!

Wow, ice cream! Only in the big cities!

A popular store for personal items found in practically every mall. Notice the 1 Yuan sale (that's $0.12)!

Here's a piece of an exhibit on display in the mall. I'm not sure what kind of audience they hope to attract.

Here's another piece of the exhibit.

Another view of the mall.

Yet another view of the mall.

Here's a hotel all about KTV. For those of you that don't know, KTV is practically China's official passtime. It's basiicaly a nationwide chain of karaoke bars on steroids.
